Abstract

Background. Menarche or first menstruation is a sign of physical and sexual maturity in female adolescents which can be responded to negatively or positively. The relationship between parents and children can help adolescents prepare for menarche. The problem that often occurs is ineffective communication and parenting patterns that can cause children to be unprepared when menarche arrives. Aim. This study aims to determine the relationship between the closeness of parents and children with readiness to face menarche in adolescents aged 12-14 years. Method. This type of observational research with a cross-sectional approach. The number of samples is 146 respondents. The instrument for measuring each variable uses a questionnaire. This research was conducted at SMPN 137 Jakarta in May-June 2023. Results. 69.9% of respondents are ready to face menarche. 82.2% of respondents have good closeness with their parents. 71.9% of respondents have parents with functional communication patterns, and 55.5% of respondents have parents with democratic parenting styles. The result of the analysis is that there is a relationship between parent-child closeness (p value=0.028), communication pattern (p value=0.039), and parenting style (p value=0.039) with readiness to face menarche in adolescents. Conclusion. There is a relationship between parent-child closeness, communication patterns, and parenting styles with readiness to face menarche in adolescents aged 12-14 years at SMPN 137 Jakarta.
