Abstract

This article is a desk review or literature study about the root causes of SuluSultanate’s claim over Sabah, Malaysia in 2013. It will explore how economical and political interests have exacerbated the existing historical claims between the Sulu Sultanate, the Government of Philippines, and the Government of Malaysia.This research aims at answering questions that include: how the Sulu Sultanate formulates its identity as a separate entity from the Philippines?and what issues are brought by this distinct identity? The research is conducted through qualitative method, describing more on the claim made by Sulu Sultanate over Sabah, Malaysia and explaining the relation between the state and identity politics, as well as factors that cause the standoff in early 2013.
