Abstract

This study aims to explain the urgency or significance of day care for elderly tomprove the welfare of theelderly in Indonesia. This research used literature and document studies with a qualitative-descriptiveapproach. The results of the research show that elderly day care has been implemented in Indonesia since2005 and it has a positive impact on the physical and psychological health of the elderly. However, in 2018,day care service for elderly was removed due to the changes in government policies. Therefore, it becomesurgent to reimplement day care for elderly because of the increasing number of older people and theincreasing number of productive older people in the formal sector. As a result, there is no one to take carethe elderly at home. Thus, it results in loneliness and even neglection among elderly. Besides, elderly daycare can be a solution to take care of older people during daytime, day care can be a center of fun activities. Therefore, they can socialize, participate, receive social support and alleviate the burden of caregivers. Italso can reduce financial expensebecause day care is much more efficient than the cost of nursing homeservices. For these reasons, the government needs to modify the policies by reaffirming the existence of daycare as an alternative services for elderly. Hence, the Social RehabilitationAssistance Program that is nowbeing implemented should integrate or accommodate day care services as community-based services, as wellas to anticipate the potential complexity problems caused by the explosion of elderly population. Keywords:day care, older people, community-based services, social services, social rehabilitation.
