Abstract

Cooking oil is difficult to separate from people life. Fried foods are usually more delicious and tasty. Thus, frying is the most practical way to cook. In the process of frying, cooking oil acts as a medium to transfer heat quickly and evenly on the surface of the material being fried. The use of cooking oil continuously and repeatedly at high temperatures (160-180°C) in the frying process will resulted complex degradation reactions in the oil. Cooking oil is also changing the color from yellow to dark colors. This research studied the ability of cornhusk bioadsorbent to reduce levels of free fatty acids (FFA), peroxide value (PV) and dark colors used cooking oil. Treatment with bioadsorben is expected to improve the quality of used cooking oil, so the service life can be extended. Bioadsorbent made from agricultural waste, such as cornhusk. Agricultural waste be cleaned, further milled powder. Then the powder was carried out delignification process using NaOH. After neutralized with HCl, it was washed with distilled water. Further, solids are dried to obtain bioadsorbent. The adsorption process is done by a variable mass bioadsorbent : 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14 grams. Used cooking oil and bioadsorbent stir with a speed of 1000 rpm at a constant temperature of 110oC for one hour. Further, the cooking oil was filtered by vacuum, and clean used cooking oil that has been analyzed for levels of free fatty acids (FFA), peroxide value (PV), and color. Results showed, bioadsorbent can reduce the levels of FFA, peroxide value, and the dark colors used cooking oil. Use of bioadsorbent 6 grams can reduce levels of FFA from 0.8153 % to 0.3353 %, and 4 grams bioadsorbent can lower peroxide value from 16.116 meq peroxide H2O2/kg oil to 7.11 meq H2O2/kg oil. The dark colors decline from 1.498 Abs to 1.345 Abs on the use of mass bioadsorbent 10 grams.
