Abstract

The objective of this study is to understand the adsorbance capacity of diatomic earth to lower the level of free fatty acid (FFA), peroxide value (PV), and the dark colour of waste cooking oil. It is expected that the treatment of adsorbent will improve the quality of cooking oil to extend its lifetime. Adsorption process was conducted for varied diatomic earth mass: 5; 7.5; 10; 12.5 and 15 gr. Waste cooking oil and adsorbent were mixed at a constant temperature of 110oC for one hour. Afterwards, the cooking oil was vacuum-screened, and the clean cooking oil was analysed for its FFA content, PV, and colour. It was observed that the adsorbent made of diatomic earth can lower the FFA content, PV, and dark colour of waste cooking oil. An amount of 15 gram diatomic earth adsorbent can lower the FFA content of waste cooking oil from 1.0314% to 0.7248%, PV was lowered from 4.6 meq H2O2 / kg oil to 7.8 meq H2O2 / kg oil, and colour absorbance was lowered from 0.659 Abs to 0.226 Abs.
